You're Welcome.
Find out about what is happening in your District.
September 2023

Hello, everyone.

Mark and I  are enjoying club visits hearing about projects and connecting with your communities. We feel the energy and excitement among our clubs and members who continue to Create Hope in the World.

I have always wanted and embraced opportunities and challenges of change. We are about to go through the most significant change in our 102-year history as part of the Regionalisation pilot. The District's Rotary and Rotaract clubs are preparing to vote to elect a Regional Council to represent and support us.
Each Rotary and Rotaract club will be able to cast one vote for each of the nine Regional Council positions they are eligible to vote for. Only Rotaract clubs will be eligible to vote for the Rotaract Nominee.
Voting opens on Tuesday 17th October 2023 and closes on Tuesday 31 October 2023, with votes submitted by each club's designated Club Officer.
Voting will be preferential.

More information on the election process can be found here: https://creatingtomorrowrotary.org/regional-council-elections
Please direct all election enquiries to Zone8Elections@rotary.org.

RLI for Free
The Rotary Leadership Institute is a facilitated learning program that lets members know what's in Rotary for them and how to use the power of the worldwide Rotary network to do good in the World. By enabling member attendance at RLI, you WILL improve your club member retention rate and unlock more active participation. We need to know what is the best time for your members. Let your Assistant Governor know, and we will book a date in October.

I am calling passionate Rotarians to support New Club Development.
You may have heard we have a new club development Chair, PDG Alma Reynolds. Alma wants to develop a  district mentor group that will give support and training to assist in developing potential new style clubs such as passport or focussed. The idea is to tap into the new regionalisation training group and start supporting any initiatives we can. Let your Assistant Governor know your interest in mentoring new clubs.

Keep up your excellent work, and continue to create Hope in the World.

Linda

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month

Rotary goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

Enhancing Basic Education skills and Literacy is essential in reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Improvements can reduce maternal death, improve childhood survivability, and reduce poverty. They can also enable success in business or a profession.

District 9820 has been a great supporter this this program for several years now. With your help, the Global Grant has now been fully funded! what an achievement!

As we went to press, it became clear that we have achieved our fundraising objective of USD 3.9 million which is just fantastic. So, the project is now fully funded – please read the Stop Press item at the end of the newsletter for more details.

Heavenly Holiday
HEAVENLY HOLIDAYS

Over the past year, Eric from Grand Ridge Brewery and Heavenly Holidays have supported many of our Rotary projects with products and getaways. Perhaps you sampled some of their Beer and cider at the International Convention in Melbourne? I would like to thank Eric and his team for again supporting Rotary. Eric has donated a getaway voucher to the value of $1200.00. This is going to be raffled off and drawn at the conference in Warrnambool. Tickets will go on sale soon, get in early, buy as many as you can. Prize will be drawn at Conference.

Heavenly Holidays offers amazing houses in some of the most picturesque locations around the country. They are offering Rotarians an amazing opportunity to grab a bargain. These are not any ordinary houses, they are high-end, where you can indulge in ultimate luxury. With a range of apartments available, catering to all types of travelers, from solo adventurers to families and groups. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a family vacation, our apartments offer the perfect balance of space and privacy.

We would be delighted to offer them a 10 percent discount off the advertised Heavenly Holiday website pricing at any of our high-end luxury properties in Melbourne and or Queensland.

The easiest way to do this (as we are currently updating the website) is via Jason Bell jason@grandridgegroup.com, once the property has been selected to stay at.

Rotary is, by and large, good at recruiting new members but not all that great at keeping them. And
so, although we have excellent years of growth in some clubs. Overall we have been at best holding
our own as District.

Hopefully, those of you have acted on our first call to action and screened Jessie Harman’s video and
undertaken an in-house survey may have some guides for ensuring you are keeping members
engaged and keen to stay.

Peace in Maffra Yarram & Sale
The Rotary Club of Maffra had an exciting meeting recently, with a visit from AG Warren McPherson and from Gabe Hau, District 9800 Peacebuilding Committee Chair, our guest speaker for the evening, and the induction of a new member!

Gabe Hau brought a Peace Pole with him. He showed how the 8 Pillars of Positive Peace tie in well with everything that Rotary stands for and has achieved with its projects worldwide. He encouraged us to ‘plant’ a Peace Pole, do a training course at the Rotary Positive Peace Academy, and to become a Peacebuilder Club, to spread the word about the need for promoting Peace in the world.

During the week, Gabe had also visited clubs in Yarram and Sale, opening the door to having major speakers talk to all 3 clubs. Gabe was happy to be hosted by members of the clubs, which usefully meet on consecutive days, Tuesdays (Sale), Wednesdays (Yarram) and Maffra (Thursdays). This means that we can justify engaging more high-profile speakers from out of our area.

Gabe has presented at the District 9820 Assembly and several other clubs across the District. Becoming a Peace club is simple. For more information please email linda.humphries@rotary9820.org.au
