International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR)

I have recently been appointed Regional Commodore for Victoria and Tasmania of IYFR.

IYFR was formed in 1947 in Great Britain, making it the oldest continuously active recreational fellowship in Rotary. IYFR is also the largest of the worldwide Rotary vocational fellowships, with approximately 100 active “fleets” and around 3000 members in 24 countries.  Member fleets are located in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine and the USA.

Objectives of the Fellowship.

The International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians combines an acceptance of the principles of Rotary with a love of boats and the sea, rivers and inland waters, and uses the shared interest of yachting and seamanship as an opportunity to encourage and foster the objectives of Rotary.

IYFR objectives are:

1.To advance international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideals of service.

2.To promote Rotary fellowship through cruising, yachting, racing, sailing, kayaking and other activities involving boats and boating.

3.To promote high standards of seamanship and abide by recognized yachting customs and etiquette on the water.

4.To support Rotary service projects and opportunities, on and off the water.

Fleets across the world comprise of mainly active and former Rotarians and Rotoractors who only need to have an active interest in boating (be it from kayak to large yacht/motor boat) and while they do not need to be boat
owners, a fleet with, or active access to boats adds considerably to fellowship outings and activities.

There are Fleets in each Australian State with Victoria having two.  The Victoria Fleet covers the Port Philip and Westernport Bay regions while the Gippsland Lakes Fleet accommodates members generally from Sale eastwards to the NSW border as well as a number District 9820 Rotarians residing between Berwick and Sale.

Rotarians from across the State are eligible to join either of these Fleets and potential members from unique waterways regions such as Eildon and the Murray River could become a Fleet in their own right or a Squadron under one of the two existing Victoria Fleet’s banner.

The Gippsland Lakes Fleet membership costs which include annual registration with the International Fellowship, is $25 per annum. This fleet recently celebrated 30 years since its formation formation.

Individual Fleets centred on a particular region allow fellowship events to be undertaken without the need for long-distance travel. However the coordination of events provides for greater fellowship and with this in mind, at least one annual event is organised to encourage members of both fleets to attend.

Both fleets welcome new members in keeping with the IYFR’s membership expansion of 11% over the last 12 months.

While the region covers Victoria and Tasmania, the Tasmanian fleet is currently in recess.  Rotarians interested in reactivating the Tasmania Fleet should contact RC Don Ripper or one of the Victorian Fleet Commodores.
Victoria’s Gippsland Lakes Fleet membership is generally drawn from Rotary Clubs easterly from and including Sale and the Gippsland Lakes region and is the largest fleet in Australia.
The Victoria Fleet caters for Rotarians based around Port Phillip bay  from Melbourne suburban Clubs, Westernport, the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas and the Geelong Region.
